The surprising life of Dutch conductor Marnix Willem Steffen took him abroad for twenty years, shaping his career in Spain and South America. Connected with various embassies and authorities, he was also responsible for innovating concerts and the realization of an important cultural exchange, for which he received two prestigious awards.

After his debut in 2005 with the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, his performances brought him from grand concert halls to small churches, and from the Andes to the Amazon. He conducted leading orchestras in Spain, France and Germany, as well as in Peru, Ecuador, and Chile. In Amsterdam, Marnix had the invaluable opportunity to meet Bernard Haitink, and assisted to rehearsals with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Through his concerts, Steffen also created climate awareness, connectivity, and inclusion. His work exemplifies how a classical orchestra can address modern issues by connecting people and ideas.

He returned to the Netherlands in 2020 due to the pandemic and made his debut in 2022 with PHION, Orchestra of Gelderland and Overijssel. The Dutch magazine “Luister” published an extensive article about his life and musical experiences abroad. Marnix is delighted to have joined Impulse Art Management and has future conducting engagements in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain.

In addition to his work as a conductor, he remains a passionate violinist, collaborating on stage alongside a variety of international artists.

“Brahms places us with both feet on earth,

with all it’s beauty and tragedy,

while Bruckner can liberate us,

being able to lift us up,

and take us to heaven;

between one and another,

we all find ourselves…”

“It has been a real pleasure working with Mr. Steffen. His conducting was very clear and very musically; he reminded me of the young James Levine.”

Stanley Drucker, New York Philharmonic

“I encountered Marnix Willem Steffen at the Cadaques Conducting Competition, and was impressed by his ability to understand and convey his musicianship. The orchestra was obviously of the same opinion, performing very well for him. All of this augurs well for a successful career as a conductor and music director.”

Sir Neville Marriner, Orquestra de Cadaqués

“I have known Mr. Steffen for the past three years as a valued musician with a charming personality. I wish him all the luck with his future career, and hope that his next position provides him with the challenge that I feel he requires in order to fulfil his considerable potential.”

Adrian Leaper, Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria
