The Journey of Marnix Willem Steffen

In the symphony of life, some melodies traverse continents, and so is the odyssey of Marnix Willem Steffen, a Dutch conductor whose baton has led the symphonies of cultural exchange and harmony across the globe.

Born in the Netherlands, Marnix's affinity for music began in his earliest days with the violin, and after his debut with the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, his journey as a conductor began. In Amsterdam, Steffen had the privilege of meeting Bernard Haitink and attending rehearsals with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, an experience that profoundly influenced his repertoire, making the symphonies of Brahms and Bruckner integral parts of his musical journey.

As he crossed the boundaries of his homeland, Marnix found himself immersed in the vibrant rhythms of Spain and the kaleidoscope of cultures in South America. Twenty years living abroad became a symphonic journey, conducting many different orchestras in Europe and South America. With baton in hand, Marnix collaborated with embassies and authorities, innovated concerts, and promoted cultural dialogue. From raising awareness about climate change with Earth Hour concerts to the integration of Venezuelan refugees, his baton possessed a transformative power that reached beyond the stage.

His efforts were recognized with prestigious honors, including the High Honorific Distinction of Culture from Peru and a special decoration from the Andean Community for his dedication and spiritual involvement.

As the sounds of a pandemic disrupted the rhythms of the world, Marnix returned to his Dutch roots. Yet, he brought with him the harmonies of his global odyssey, making his debut with PHION and embarking on new musical adventures. His life story was beautifully depicted in "Luister" magazine; a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and touch souls. Steffen is thrilled to be part of Impulse Art Management and looks forward to future conducting engagements in the Netherlands, Spain, Cyprus, and South America.

In addition to his work as a conductor, Marnix remains a passionate violinist, sharing his virtuosity on stage with a variety of international artists.

“Brahms places us with both feet on earth,

with all it’s beauty and tragedy,

while Bruckner can liberate us,

being able to lift us up and take us to heaven;

between one and another we all find ourselves…”

“It has been a real pleasure working with Mr. Steffen. His conducting was very clear and very musically; he reminded me of the young James Levine.”

Stanley Drucker, New York Philharmonic

“I encountered Marnix Willem Steffen at the Cadaques Conducting Competition, and was impressed by his ability to understand and convey his musicianship. The orchestra was obviously of the same opinion, performing very well for him. All of this augurs well for a successful career as a conductor and music director.”

Sir Neville Marriner, Orquestra de Cadaqués

“I have known Mr. Steffen for the past three years as a valued musician with a charming personality. I wish him all the luck with his future career, and hope that his next position provides him with the challenge that I feel he requires in order to fulfil his considerable potential.”

Adrian Leaper, Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria
