From Europe to South America...

Involved in different cultural activities, dutch conductor Marnix Willem Steffen is contributing to the diffusion and development of classical music in Peru, and supporting the musical exchange between Europe and South America.
In 2013 he received the High Honorific Distinction of Culture for the 192° Anniversary of the Independence of Peru.

Dutch conductor Marnix Willem Steffen arrived to Lima in 2011 as the new musical director of the Orquesta Ciudad de los Reyes and guest conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Perú. Since then he has conducted all the important orchestras in Peru and has been a well seen guest with other South American orchestras.

His international conducting career began after being awarded at the famous Conducting Competition of Cadaquès, obtaining special recommendations from Sir Neville Marriner. Orchestras conducted in Europe include the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Orquesta de Girona, l’Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Leipziger Symphonieorchester, Filarmónica di Roma and Budapest Symphonie Orchester.

He is currently artistic and music director of the Symphony Orchestra of San Borja and of Nueva Lima Clásica, and has future compromises in several other South American countries and Europe. Throughout his professional life he has performed in over 15 countries on 4 continents, and has received awards in The Netherlands, Spain and Peru.

“It has been a real pleasure working with Mr. Steffen. His conducting was very clear and very musically; he reminded me of the young James Levine.”

Stanley Drucker, New York Philharmonic

“I encountered Marnix Willem Steffen at the Cadaques Conducting Competition, and was impressed by his ability to understand and convey his musicianship. The orchestra was obviously of the same opinion, performing very well for him. All of this augurs well for a successful career as a conductor and music director.”

Sir Neville Marriner.

“I have known Mr. Steffen for the past three years as a valued musician with a charming personality. I wish him all the luck with his future career, and hope that his next position provides him with the challenge that I feel he requires in order to fulfil his considerable potential.”
