The surprising life of Dutch conductor Marnix Willem Steffen took him abroad for twenty years, living in Spain and South America. Through the many encounters with different orchestras, concerts and special occasions, he has become one of the most versatile conductors of his generation.

After his debut in 2005 with the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, he has conducted orchestras in The Netherlands, Germany, France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Peru, Ecuador and Chile. In Amsterdam he met Bernard Haitink and assisted to rehearsals with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Living in South America, its vibrant music became part of his life and repertoire. Vice versa, he presented Beethoven and Brahms cycles with orchestras there. He also created climate awareness with his concerts for “Earth Hour”, and received two important awards for cultural exchange and musical involvement.

Recently he came back from South America to The Netherlands on a repatriation flight, because of the pandemic. He made his debut in 2022 with PHION, Orchestra of Gelderland and Overijssel. The Dutch magazine “Luister” published a long article about his life and musical experiences abroad. He was happy to join Impulse Art Management and has future conducting engagements in The Netherlands, Spain, Cyprus and in South America.

“I have followed my heart,

lived on an island,

seen angels,

slept on my own mountain,

discovered the secret of music,

conducted on the waves of the pacific ocean,

and brought Brahms from the Andes to the Amazon.”

“It has been a real pleasure working with Mr. Steffen. His conducting was very clear and very musically; he reminded me of the young James Levine.”

Stanley Drucker, New York Philharmonic

“I encountered Marnix Willem Steffen at the Cadaques Conducting Competition, and was impressed by his ability to understand and convey his musicianship. The orchestra was obviously of the same opinion, performing very well for him. All of this augurs well for a successful career as a conductor and music director.”

Sir Neville Marriner, Orquestra de Cadaqués

“I have known Mr. Steffen for the past three years as a valued musician with a charming personality. I wish him all the luck with his future career, and hope that his next position provides him with the challenge that I feel he requires in order to fulfil his considerable potential.”

Adrian Leaper, Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria
